Abstract
In this letter, James W. Grimes provides a Mr. C. Lanman with some basic biographical information about himself.
Biographical/Historical Note
James Wilson Grimes was born to James and Elizabeth (Wilson) Grimes in Deering, New Hampshire on October 20, 1816. After completing his education at Hampton Academy and Dartmouth College, he moved west to practice law in the Black Hawk Purchase of the Wisconsin Territory. This area later became Burlington, Iowa. Grimes became deeply involved in local and national politics, serving in the Iowa Territorial House of Representatives (1838-1839, 1843-1844) and as Governor of Iowa (1854-1858) before being elected to the U. S. Senate in 1859. During Andrew Jackson's impeachment trial, Grimes (who had to be carried into the Senate chamber after a paralytic stroke) cast the vote that spared the president. Grimes resigned his seat on December 6, 1869 due to his failing health. He died in Burlington, Iowa on February 7, 1872 and is buried in the Aspen Grove Cemetery.
