Saffell Family Letters
This collection includes approximately 130 letters by members of the Saffell and Bogle family in correspondence with one another regarding their daily activities between April 23, 1833, and February 10, 1836. Of particular interest are two letters authored during the Civil War: one letter dated September 12, 1864, from Richard M. Saffell during his time with the 26th Tennessee infantry stationed in Jonesboro, Georgia and another letter dated August 5, 1864, by U.L. York of the 63rd Tennessee Regiment informing Colonel Saffell of the death of his brother Samuel H. Saffell. In addition to the correspondence, the collection contains assorted items of note including: news clippings pertaining to the Bogle and Saffell family, a slave and store ledger, and two confederate bills.

Abstract
This collection includes approximately 130 letters by members of the Saffell and Bogle family in correspondence with one another regarding their daily activities between April 23, 1833, and February 10, 1836. In addition to the correspondence, the collection contains assorted items of note including: news clippings pertaining to the Bogle and Saffell family, a slave and store ledger, and two confederate bills.
Biographical/Historical Note
John Saffell (1806-1841) married Clementina Augusta Meredith (1810-1857) on January 30, 1833, and the couple had four children: Richard Meredith "Dick" (1834-1865), Samuel H. (1837-1864), Sarah Jones (Saffell) Holland (1839-1909), and Elizabeth Cox (Saffell) Bogle (1841-1938). Elizabeth C. Saffell married John Campbell McCroskey Bogle (1830-1906) on September 17, 1857, and the couple settled in Maryville. John Bogle was the son of Andrew Bogle (1802-1880) and Elizabeth McNary McCroskey (1803-1885) and had six siblings: Hugh Montgomery (1832-1893), Ann Elizabeth Montgomery (Bogle) Caldwell (1836-1923), Hannah Lavena (Bogle) McBath (1838-1909), Nancy Angeline (Bogle) McCampbell (1841-1924), Andrew Columbus (1844-1854), and Robert Cass (1847-1879). Elizabeth's sister, Sarah Saffell, lived with the couple until she married William Colter Holland (1837-1918) in 1870. Sam Saffell married Melissa A. Cook on February 17, 1859, and the couple had one son, John (1860-). Both Sam and Dick Saffell farmed in Roane County.
Sam Saffell enlisted in Company B of the 63rd Tennessee Infantry (CSA) as a 1st Lieutenant on April 5, 1862. He was killed on June 24, 1864 during the Battle of Petersburg. Richard Saffell enlisted in Company F the 26th Tennessee Infantry (CSA) as a 1st Lieutenant on July 5, 1861. He was captured at Fort Donelson on February 16, 1862 and held at Camp Chase and Johnson's Island, Ohio before being exchanged at Vicksburg in September of that year. He was promoted to Major on October 13, 1862 and to Colonel on October 26, 1863. Saffell was wounded severely on January 2, 1863 and was killed on March 21, 1865 during the North Carolina Campaign.
