Abstract

This collection consists of two letters written in late 1904 to Col. Samuel L. King of Bristol, Tennessee. The letters are from Thomas B. Carroll, Secretary to the Tenn. Governor, and Henry Grove, Jr. of Philadelphia regarding the launch of the USS Tennessee in Washington, D.C. on December 3, 1904.

Biographical/Historical Note

Colonel Samuel Lee King (1863-1928) was born in Bristol, Tennessee to John G. King (1823-1887) and Harriet Netherland King (1832-1882). The King family is noted as being an early influential family in the East Tennessee region; Bristol was founded on the land of Samuel's great-uncle, Reverend James Goodson King (1791-1867). Samuel served as president of Bristol-Goodson Water Company. He was married to Annie Phipps King (1874-1966) and they had four children.

The USS Tennessee, later renamed Memphis, was a U.S. Navy armored cruiser that launched on December 3, 1904. It was sponsored by Annie K. Frazier, daughter of Tennessee Governor James B. Frazier. The ship met its demise on August 29, 1916 when it was run aground by violent waves in the harbor of Santo Domingo.
