Biographical/Historical Note
The photos of this collection depict scenes of Union soldiers at Lookout Mountain and also war grounds along the Tennessee River and in Augusta, Ga during the Civil War Era. The Battle of Lookout Mountain was fought November 24, 1863 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In this battle, Union forces commanded under Major General Joseph Hooker defeated Confederate forces commanded under Major General Carter L. Stevenson. The slides depict various Civil War Battles and naval scenes, including the Battle of Antietam (17 Sept.1862) and the First Battle of Memphis (6 June 1862). However, one slide is labeled as Departure on the City of Tokio and is not of the Civil War Era.
