Biographical/Historical Note

Myrtle Velma Lebow Henry was born on November 4, 1905 in Knoxville, Tennessee. She grew up in Knoxville where she graduated from Knoxville High School in 1922 and Knoxville Business College in 1923. A self-taught pianist, she learned to play organ at Bell Avenue Baptist Church. She married Robert Lee Henry Jr. in 1942. Her husband served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1955, they moved to Bristol, Tenn. where she became active in the Bristol Music Club and taught piano lessons to young people in her home. Velma died in Bristol on March 27, 1991 at the age of 85.
