This collection consists of postcards, correspondence, photographs, and personal papers of Samuel Houston Jestes and Bertha Regina "Bessie" Jones ranging from 1905 to 1919.

The postcards and correspondence are largely between Jestes and Jones, though there are a few postcards to and from friends. The photographs, mostly portrait and group pictures, lack identifying information except for two taken along the Mississippi River in Memphis, Tenn. in 1912. The personal papers belong to Jones and are largely related to her time as a teacher.

Abstract

This collection consists of postcards, correspondence, photographs, and personal papers of Samuel Houston Jestes and Bertha Regina "Bessie" Jones ranging from 1905 to 1919.

Biographical/Historical Note

Samuel Houston Jestes (family surname also spelled Justice and Justus) was born on December 2, 1875 to Marion Monroe Justice (1850-1951) and Talithia (sometimes spelled Telethia and Telitha) Caroline Brumett (1846-1928) in Morgan County, Tennessee. He received his law education from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee, graduating in 1919. He was admitted to the bar in 1919 as well and worked as a county court clerk. Jestes passed away on April 29, 1957 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee at the age of 81. He is buried in Wartburg Cemetery in Morgan County, Tennessee.

Bertha Regina “Bessie” Jones was born on November 6, 1885 in Sunbright, Tennessee. She was a teacher for Morgan County schools in Tennessee. She married S. H. Jestes on January 1, 1914; they were married 39 years. Jones passed away on March 23, 1953 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee at the age of 67.
