This collection contains a large selection of playbills, programs, and travel books collected by John S. Van Gilder.

Biographical/Historical Note

John Somers Van Gilder was born to Rogers and Aurelia Van Gilder on February 7, 1892 in Knoxville, Tennessee. During World War II, he served as the Knoxville News Sentinel's Navy War Correspondent and sailed on the USS Roper several times in 1942. He died in June 1971 and is buried in Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

John S. Van Gilder presented this collection to the University of Tennessee Libraries, Knoxville, Special Collections in 1966.
