McGill Family Papers
This collection contains documents concerning the McGill family from Knoxville, TN. Four of the McGill children, addressed in this collection, served in the U.S. military during World War II.. Many materials are photocopies.
Folder 1 contains newspaper clippings, correspondence, certificates and photos regarding Troy A. McGill, Sergeant in the U.S. Army and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
Folder 2 contains publications, personal poems, and reports relating to William W. McGill, U.S. Navy. Also included are newspaper clippings about relatives and friends of William's also serving in the war.
Folder 3 contains the personal combat diary and obituary of Walter O. "Chick" McGill, U.S. Army Air Forces.
Folder 4 contains the obituary of James Hardie McGill, U.S. Army.

Abstract
This collection contains documents concerning the McGill family from Knoxville, TN. Four of the McGill children, addressed in this collection, served in the U.S. military during World War II.
Biographical/Historical Note
The McGills were a family from Knoxville, TN. Mr. and Mrs. James Houston McGill had 13 children. Four of the eight sons in the family served in the U.S. military during World War II.
Sergeant Troy A. McGill, born July 15, 1914, was a Sergeant with the U.S. Army in Troop G, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. He was killed in action in Papua New Guinea on March 4, 1944. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor, and a TN-NC highway was dedicated in his name.
William W. McGill served in the U.S. Navy, enlisting the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served in the Pacific Theater on the USS Colorado and the USS Kanawha. He retired from the Navy on November 30, 1978.
Walter O. McGill, born June 12, 1915, served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during the war. He participated in combat missions over Germany. Walter died on June 4, 1958 and is buried in Knox County, TN.
James Hardie McGill (1926?-1991) served in the U.S. Army, participating in the Battle of the Bulge.
