This collection features various military documents, photographs, and books from David F. Ross, a Lieutenant in the 5th Air Force deployed in the Pacific Theater during World War II. This collection contains military and flight school documents that describe his assignments and progress. Also included are photographs from his deployment in the Pacific and news clippings from a local Knoxville newspaper describing his accomplishments.

Series I: This series consists of Ross' military documents, an official AAF guidebook, flight school documents from his time in Georgia, and flight records from 1944-1947. Series II: Included in this series are letters from various people, including family members, to David F. Ross and reunion updates addressed to Squadron "A." Series III: The news clippings are from the The Third Division Front Line Souvenir Edition, The Jungle Skipper, and other various articles. Series IV: This series contains photographs from Ross' time serving in the Pacific. Series V: Included in this series are badges from Ross' service as well as his identification card and an Army of the United States Certificate. Series VI: The Books series contains three books: Displaying Australia and New Guinea, History of the Third Infantry Division, and Moresby to Manila via Troop Carrier. Series VII: Included in this series are various documents and pieces of foreign currency from Ross' service. Series VIII: The Oversize series contains maps of New Guinea and an AAF Officers Qualifications Record.

Abstract

Biographical/Historical Note

David F. Ross was born in Knoxville, TN. He attended various military academies, including the Army Air Forces Advanced Flying School in Moody Field, GA. A Lieutenant in the 5th Air Force, he was deployed to the Pacific Theater during World War II. He fought in various battles, including those between the Filipinos and the Japanese. He was honorably discharged and awarded for his achievements during World War II.
