Abstract
This collection contains a lithograph document compiled by Captain William E. Merrill in 1864 featuring records of bridges and tunnels along the railway between Georgia and Tennessee.
Biographical/Historical Note
William Emery Merrill was born at Fort Howard, Wisconsin on October 11, 1837. Merrill was Chief Topographical Engineer of the Army of the Cumberland, which he was assigned to in 1863. In 1859 he graduated at the top of his class from West Point and continued his education as an assistant to a professor of engineering there. He was notable for his engineering accomplishments while working for the government. He died in Illinois on December 14, 1891.
