Biographical/Historical Note

William Gannaway "Parson" Brownlow was a Medthodist minister and the editor of the Knoxville Whig in the 1840s. He served as Governor of Tennessee from 1865 to 1869 and as a United States Senator from Tennessee from 1869 to 1875. He is known for his uncompromising and radical viewpoints and his relentless personal attacks against his religious and political oppenents in the Knoxville Whig.

Reverend Abram Pryne, of McGrawville, New York, was a clergyman and editor of an abolitionist newspaper. Pryne agreed to debate Brownlow in 1858 when Brownlow refused a debate with noted abolitionist Frederick Douglass on the basis of Douglass's race.
