Biographical/Historical Note
Edmund Burke Whitman was born in Massachusetts on October 18, 1812. On July 18, 1862, he enlisted as a captain and was commissioned into US Volunteers Assistant Quartermaster. He was promoted two more times during the course of the Civil War. He became a Major and Lt. Colonel on March 3, 1865. He was mustered out on August 20, 1868. He died on September 2, 1883.
