Abstract

This diploma certifies that the East Tennessee Female Institute conferred the degree of Mistress of Polite Literature on Isabella Reed Boyd on July 29, 1847.

Biographical/Historical Note

Isabella Reed Boyd was born to Benjamin Stephenson and Cynthia Kerr (Brooks) Boyd in Tennessee on June 8, 1831. She earned a Mistress of Polite Literature degree at the East Tennessee Female Institute in 1847 and married Samuel Beckett Boyd (1828-1890) on April 27, 1853. The couple had eight children: Elizabeth Wilson (Boyd) Caswell (1854-1926), Cynthia Irwin (Boyd) McCue (1857-1917), Isabella Reed (Boyd) Allen (1860-1936), Benjamin Stephenson (1862-1929), Samuel Beckett, Sarah Sutherland (Boyd) Saxton (1867-1912), Annie Bruce (1869-1881), and Mary Reed (Boyd) Birdsong. Isabella Boyd died on September 25, 1907 and is buried in Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.
