Biographical/Historical Note
Washington Irving was born in New York City 1783. He was a short story writer that is best known for his stories Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow which were published in The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon. He also wrote many historical works on famous people such as George Washigton, Muhammad, and Christopher Columbus.From 1842 to 1846, he served as an ambassador to Spain. In 1848, Irving was appointed as the first chairman of the Astor Library, now known as the New York Public Library. He remained in this position until his death in 1859 in Sunnyside.
