Abstract
The papers of Dr. Charles Bell Burke consist of poems, manuscripts, book reviews, and correspondence from 1889-1915 and 1931-1935.
Biographical/Historical Note
English language and literature professor Charles Bell Burke Sr. was born in Tennessee in 1867 to Robert Arnold and Elizabeth Anne Jordan Burke. Burke was married to Eleanora Richards Burke (1868-1937) and they had at least one son, Charles Bell Burke (1894-1923). Burke died in 1953 and is buried in Knox County, Tennessee. Burke taught at the University of Tennessee from 1909 until 1942, serving as head of the English Department from 1923-1942.
Arrangement
Collection consists of one box divided into three series: I. Original copies of poems, articles, manuscripts of Whitman, and book reviews; II. Correspondence; and III. Manuscripts.
Acquisition Note
This collection was received by the University of Tennessee Library in 1952 as bequest of Dr. Burke with additions made in 1953 and 1962. The 1962 addition (carbons of previously obtained originals) was made by Dr. Burke's sister-in-law, Mrs. Gordon L. Burke.
