Biographical / Historical
Franz Anton Heydel was born August 30, 1832 in Langenbach, Germany. Along with his wife Erdmuthe and their five children, he emigrated to the United States in 1886. The family settled in Wartburg, Tennessee, a small town founded in 1844 as a settlement for German and Swiss immigrants. Heydel worked as a farmer, and was naturalized as a US citizen in 1892. When he died on November 23, 1902, Heydel’s will left over three hundred acres of land, two homesteads, and a sawmill to his wife, five living daughters, and several grandchildren. Franz Anton Heydel is buried in a family plot on private land in Morgan County, Tennessee.
