In this indenture document dated May 19, 1784, Waightstile (usually spelled Waightstill) Avery, John Blair McMahon, and John Thomas of North Carolina indebt themselves jointly to George Barkley for the sum of 44 pounds. Additionally, Avery alone indebts himself to Barkley for 22 pounds.

Abstract

In this indenture document, Waightstile (usually spelled Waightstill) Avery, John Blair McMahon, and John Thomas of North Carolina indebt themselves jointly to George Barkley for the sum of 44 pounds. Additionally, Avery alone indebts himself to Barkley for 22 pounds.

Biographical/Historical Note

Waightstill Avery was born on May 10, 1741 in New London, Connecticut, to Humphrey and Jerusha Morgan Avery. He married Leah Probart Francks in 1778. For most of his life, he worked as a lawyer and politican in the Western North Carolina area. Avery died on March 13, 1821 in Morganton, North Carolina. Avery County, North Carolina is named for him.

John Blair McMahon was born on May 23, 1741 in Ireland. He married Sarah Boone in Kentucky, and the couple had four sons. He died on October 7, 1824.

No biographical information could be found regarding John Thomas or George Barkley.
