Biographical/Historical Note

The Fort Sanders neighborhood of Knoxville, Tennessee, is located just west of Knoxville’s downtown and just north of the University of Tennessee. The neighborhood is named for the Civil War-era Union bastion that once stood in the area and was site of a key battle, the Battle of Fort Sanders, in 1863. The neighborhood developed in the late 19th century as a residential area for upper- and middle-class residents; in the late 20th century, the neighborhood began primarily housing the university’s student population. Fort Sanders still contains many of its original Victorian-era houses, several of which are on the National Register of Historic Places.
