This collection documents the work of conservationist Harold Ray Payne with the Great Smoky Mountains. Included are papers, notebooks, reports, and books on several projects by Payne such as Elkmont preservation, Wonderland Hotel, and North Shore Road. There is some correspondence with representatives regarding funding and papers regarding legislation, namely with Ted Snyder.

There is some correspondence with representatives regarding funding and papers regarding legislation, namely with Ted Snyder.

Biographical/Historical Note

Harold Ray Payne was born in West Virginia on August 29, 1930. Payne served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He graduated from West Virginia University and later moved to the Knoxville area with his wife Genevieve (1929-2021) to work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Payne was an avid hiker and conservationist, spending time volunteering and hiking in the Smokies. He was a longtime member of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. Payne died February 24, 2023, and is buried in Anderson County, Tennessee.
