Biographical / Historical
The Great Seal of the State of Tennessee was adopted on September 25th, 1801, five years after the state's inception. The top half of the seal depicts a plow, wheat, and cotton. The bottom half shows a flat-bottomed boat on a river. Two words appear on the seal, "agriculture" and "commerce." The symbolism of the seal reflects Tennessee's historic reliance on these two pillars.
