William D. Scarlett Jr. World War II Postcards
Collection contains postcards that William D. Scarlett Jr. sent to his mother, Gladys Scarlett in Knoxville, Tennessee. Scarlett sent the postcards from Switzerland and France at the end of World War II, from May to August 1945.
Eight of the postcards depict landscape and city scenes from St. Moritz, Chur, and Zermatt, Switzerland, and Verdun, France, in black and white as well as color. Eleven of the postcards are from a series titled "The Allies in Paris." Each card has a handwritten note from William to his mother inscribed on the back.

Biographical / Historical
William Doram Scarlett Jr. was born on April 28th, 1924. His father, William Doram Scarlett Sr., served in World War I. William Sr. died in 1940, widowing Gladys Scarlett. William Jr. enlisted on May 19th, 1943 in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He died on March 5th, 1974.
