Biographical / Historical
David Van Vactor was born on May 8, 1906 in Plymouth, Indiana. He received both his Bachelor and Master of Music from Northwestern University. He studied with many composers such as Mark Wessel and Franz Schmidt. He was the assistant conductor for the Chicago Civic Orchestra from 1933-1934 and was the assistant conductor at the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra from 1943-1947. He served as the conductor for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra from 1947 to 1972. He was also a professor of Flute and Composition at the University of Tennessee. He died in Los Angeles, California in 1994.
