Biographical / Historical

John Rufus Long Jr. was born March 11, 1914. He attended the University of Tennessee (1932-1936) and Vanderbilt University Law School (1936-1938). Prior to his military service, Long was a lawyer and served as the mayor of Springfield, Tennessee. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, primarily on the USS Wilkes-Barre. Long was married to Sarah Norton Long (1914-2004). Long died September 13, 1977 and is buried in Robertson County, Tennessee.
