James T. Knight Papers
The James T. Knight Papers collection consists of photographs, letters, copies of newspaper articles, and a typed journal regarding Knight's military during World War II.
The 13 photographs in this collection are snapshots from Knight's service in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific from 1944 to 1945. The typed journal documents the travel of troops from San Francisco to New Guinea in 1944. The newspaper articles contain information on his return to America as well as his obituary. Many items in the collection are accompanied by notes written by Knight's sister Virginia Knight Nelson.

Biographical / Historical
James Thomas Knight was born on October 8, 1922 in Rhea County, Tennessee to Carlos Thomas and Hazel Margaret (Tallent) Knight. He graduated from Rhea Central High School in 1940, then attended Edmondson School of Business in Chattanooga. He married Mary Ann Knight and had three children: Carol Ann, William T., and James P. Knight was employed by Southern Wood Preserving Company until he was inducted into the U.S. Army.
Knight served as a staff sergeant with the Third Army Battalion in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He served in New Guinea in the South Pacific from September 1944 until the end of 1945. He received his honorable discharge on January 13, 1946. Following service, he attended and graduated from the University of Tennessee. He died on March 28, 2010 at the age of 87 and is buried in Davidson County.
