This collection contains letters, sympathy cards, military science and tactics handbooks, and newspapers from Dewey Murphy's military service in Europe during World War II.
Biographical / Historical
Dewey Calvin Murphy was born on December 5, 1914 in Knoxville to Parnick and Della Murphy. After graduating from Knoxville High School, he attended the University of Tennessee until entering the U.S. Army. He served with the 377th Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division, Company A. During January 1944, Murphy stayed at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. In February 1944, Murphy trained at Fort Shelby, Mississippi. From February 27 to August 1944, he trained at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. He then served overseas in England beginning in August and was killed in action in Metz, France, on November 9, 1944. Murphy is buried in Knox County, Tennessee.
