This collection contains Benjamin F. Witt Jr.'s military documents and photographs from his time in the U.S. Navy during World War II, particularly while serving on the USS Moffett. The photos show work and recreational time of the service members as well as views from aboard the ship. The documents include Witt's identification card, training course certificates, newsletters and reports related to the Moffett., and other military paperwork.

Biographical / Historical

Benjamin Franklin Witt Jr. was born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia on April 6, 1916. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1939 and served in World War II as a chief gunner's mate from 1941 to 1945. He served in the USS Moffett, which served as a convoy escort in the Atlantic Ocean.
