Delmar Wiley Collection
This collection documents the World War II experiences of soldier Delmar Wiley who was declared missing in action for seven months in the Pacific Theater of War after his aircraft was attacked and shot down. The collection contains Wiley's autobiography, entitled Wiley's Island (1986), which chronicles his life and his WWII experiences. The collection also includes a pamphlet for the USS Yorktown CV-5 Club entitled "The Crier and Bylaws" (1986), and a photocopy of the article "My Lovin' Dove" from Liberty Magazine (1943).

Biographical / Historical
Delmar Dean Wiley was born January 18, 1922 in Nebraska. He enlisted with the US Navy on July 2, 1940, and served as a Naval Aviator during World War II. In August 1942, Wiley’s aircraft was shot down; Wiley was the sole survivor and after 15 days on a life raft, he landed on the Carteret Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Wiley was declared missing in action following the attack, but was rescued seven months later in April 1943. Wiley married Doris Lea Jackson (1922-2021) in 1943. Following the war, he earned an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Wiley died December 4, 2013, and is buried in Riverside County, Tennessee.
