This collection contains personal items as well as publications that document World War II soldier Harold Masden’s experiences in the war, particularly related to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Among Masden’s personal material are his typewritten accounts of his military service record and memoirs of his time in the war. Also included are publications about Pearl Harbor as well as a 25-year run of the “Pearl Harbor-Gram,” a newsletter published by the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

Biographical / Historical

Harold Lamar Masden was born on February 9, 1921. Masden attended Ardmore High School in Ardmore, Oklahoma, and enlisted with the U.S. Navy on November 16, 1939. Masden was on board the USS Maryland, working as a radio operator, during the Attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Masden remained a radioman in the Pacific Fleet during World War II and continued to serve with the Navy until his retirement in 1960.

Masden married Ann Estelle Smith on April 5, 1945. His date of death is unknown.
