Biographical / Historical

2nd Lt. William McKendree "Bill" Hudgens served as a pilot for B-17 Flying Fortress Bombers with the 410th Bomber Squadron, 94th Bomber Group in the European Theater in World War II. Hudgens was born on July 23, 1916, to Frank and Virginia Hudgens of Union City, Tennessee. He graduated from Union City High School, attended West Point, and later University of Tennessee. He entered the Army Air Forces in July 1942 and left for England in September 1943. On January 4, 1944, 27-year-old Bill was declared Missing in Action in Germany following a crash landing during a bombing mission. He was posthumously awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart for his sacrifice.
