This collection contains material documenting William W. Luttrell's experience as a soldier and a prisoner of war in World War II. Included are letters, Luttrell's own memoir, photographs, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and more.

The bulk of the collection is made up of correspondence. Some correspondence includes Luttrell's letters to his family while stationed abroad and while held as a prisoner of war. Other correspondence includes letters from friends and family to Luttrell's parents during his time listed as missing in action and later imprisoned. Included among the ephemeral items is Luttrell's metal identification tag.

Biographical / Historical

William "Bill" Walling Luttrell was born to William Eugene and Mattie Lee Walling Luttrell on January 6, 1918. He attended the University of Tennessee Knoxville and played on the football team. During World War II, Luttrell was 1st Lieutenant and executive officer of Company E, 168th Infantry, 34th Division. On February 17, 1943, he was captured by German forces while in Tunisia, North Africa. He was later flown to Italy where he was then marched to Germany. After two years of imprisonment, he was liberated on April 29, 1945, by the 14th Armored Division. He lived in Knoxville and died October 2, 2001.
