This collection contains a copy of "Hal Holmes: The War Years--WWII," a biography of Holmes written by his wife, Margarette Harrison Holmes, in 1990. The bulk of the book contains photocopies of letters Holmes penned to his wife during his wartime service. Also included are photocopies of photographs and newspaper clippings in addition to biographical information about Holmes. The book is approximately 400 pages in length.

Biographical / Historical

Hal Holmes, born in 1908, was the oldest son of V. H. (1879-1956) and Alice Davidson Holmes (1877-1955). He attended Vanderbilt University for Pre-Law and received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. He entered law practice in September 1931, and formed Holmes & Holmes with his father and youngest brother. In 1937, he married Margarette Harrison (1910-1995), and together they had one son named Hal Holmes Jr. (b. 1939). During World War II, Holmes served as a combat engineer with the U.S. Army and served in France and Germany. Holmes returned home in August 1945 and was discharged in February 1946. He returned to Holmes & Holmes and continued practicing law. Holmes died in 1989 and is buried in Gibson County, Tennessee.
