Overview

The collection includes Lenwell's own remembrances of the war in the forms of a service diary and a memoir; photocopies of photographs and service records (including discharge certificate); newspaper articles; and publications.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Dean Lenwell was a coastguardsman during World War II. Lenwell was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on August 30, 1923. He was sworn into the United States Coast Guard on August 1, 1943. During his service he traveled a number of places such as California, Long Island, and the Panama Canal. On August 12, 1943, Lenwell married Betty Sharp (1924-2015). Lenwell was discharged from service on April 6, 1946. He had multiple jobs after his military service including a research plant operator and chemical lab technician. Lenwell died on February 23, 2007 and is buried in Sumter County, Florida.
