Overview
This collection consists of a two-page handwritten letter from four employees to the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Consolidated Lead Mining Company about the status of two mining locations in Tennessee during the winter of 1849–1850.
Biographical / Historical
The Tennessee Consolidated Lead Mining Company was most likely a small-scale company that bought and worked small claims throughout the state.
Tennessee has a long history of mining, with over seventy different types of mineral and chemical deposits found across the state. Lead in particular is found in both Eastern and Middle Tennessee, usually within limestone and dolomite rock. Deposits have been mined in Washington, Unicoi, Claiborne, Union, Jefferson, Davidson, Williamson, and Polk Counties, from the early 1800s to well into the 20th century. While the state no longer focuses on producing lead, mining is still an important part of Tennessee’s economic output.
