This collection documents the World War II military service, and subsequent death, of Samuel H. Waggoner. Included is correspondence from Waggoner, particularly to his wife Anna, during his service as well as correspondence to Anna in the wake of Waggoner's death. The correspondence includes letters, greeting cards, postcard, and v-mail. Also included is memorabilia from Waggoner's service such as photographs, souvenir cards, booklets, and ephemeral items like patches, flags, and a hat.

Biographical / Historical

Samuel Harvey Waggoner fought in the European Theater of World War II with the 91st Infantry Division, 363rd Regiment. He was born on May 14, 1922, to Myrtle Bailey and Alvis Waggoner in Union County, Tennessee. Waggoner married Anna Walker (1924-2014) in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army that same year, later fighting at Po Valley and being awarded a Purple Heart for his injuries. Waggoner was killed in action at Bologna, Italy, on April 17, 1945. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville.
