Liles Family Dyers Collection
This collection is a compilation of approximately 85 historical and contemporary dye-related publications, recipe books, and other print media collected by craftspeople Jim and Dale Liles. This collection is divided into three series based on the format of the material; Monographs, Issues of Dye-Related Periodicals, and Non-Published Material. The bulk of the material dates to the 20th century, though some items date as early as the mid-18th century.

Overview
This collection is a compilation of approximately 85 historical and contemporary dye-related publications, recipe books, and other print media collected by craftspeople Jim and Dale Liles.
Biographical / Historical
Jim N. Liles’s crafts focused on dye making and dyeing with both natural and synthetic dyes. He taught and exhibited work at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Southern Highland Handicraft Guild Folk Art Center, and other regional craft schools. Liles published a monograph, The Art and Craft of Natural Dyeing, in 1990 with the University of Tennessee Press. Liles was a professor of zoology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He was featured in the Spring 1992 issue Tennessee Alumnus.
Jim was married to Dale Liles, also a craft artist and educator focused on dyeing, feltmaking, and spinning.

This collection is in five boxes. The material is arranged into three format-based series; within each series, items are arranged chronologically.
