This collection documents the World War II service and experiences of spouses Hubert and Bethel Whaley. Included are correspondence, military documents, propaganda leaflets, and postcards from the time of the war. Also included is a typed manuscript by Bethel entitled “Reminiscences of World War II” written in 1991.

Biographical / Historical

Hubert Lee Whaley was born on September 13, 1916, to James Arthur and Malinda Caldonia Ownby Whaley in Tennessee. Hubert married Bethel Wohlford (1919-2004) on January 30, 1937, and together they had four children. Hubert enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1942. He was made Chief Petty Officer and assigned to the USS French, a destroyer escort in the Pacific Area. Hubert died March 27, 1984, and is buried in Knox County alongside Bethel.
