Overview

This collection documents the World War II service of pilot Ferris Thomas. Included VHS tape with featuring Thomas alongside papers such as certificates and news articles.

Biographical / Historical

Ferris A. Thomas served in World War II as a Captain in the Air Transport Command. He was born to Bruce and Bessie Thomas on December 12, 1912, in Maryville, Tennessee. At the outbreak of World War II, Thomas was operating the Knox-Flite Company - a flying school. Following the war, he flew for Kerns Bakery and owned a local airstrip, Montvale Air Park. Thomas married Ruth Wolfe Thomas (1918-1997), a fellow pilot and teacher. Both Ferris and Ruth were inducted into the Tennessee Aviation Hall of Fame in 2018. Thomas died on April 2, 2001, and is buried in Knox County.
