This collection documents William H. Hunt's World War II service in the Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific Theatre. Included are two scrapbooks: the first, a "Life in the Service" scrapbook, includes information about Hunt at the time of his enlistment in 1942, service record information such as places of transfer and promotions, snapshots of friends and family, and a newspaper clipping about fraternity brother Fred Baumann; the second scrapbook, the larger of the two, contains portraits of Hunt in uniform as well as snapshots of training (Ft. Belvoir) and overseas service (particularly Hawaii, Leyte, and Okinawa) alongside magazine and newspaper clippings. Additionally, two photographs of Hunt at a military seminar in Florida in 1969 appear on the back cover.

The collection also includes a few loose letters and envelopes, a list of members of the 110th Engineering Battalion, and a copy of "The History of the 110th Engineer Battalion (Combat) in World War Two" by Timothy Roberts (1982).

Biographical / Historical

William Hoyl Hunt was born to Martin Condon and Anne Agness (Gill) Hunt in Knoxville, Tennessee on July 19, 1921. He began his higher education at the University of Tennessee in 1940 but dropped out to join the Army on November 11, 1942. Hunt served with Company A of the 110th Engineering Battalion, which participated at Leyte and Okinawa. He also attended Officers Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia from March to June 1943 and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on February 8, 1945. After the war ended, Hunt served in Korea before returning to the United States in March 1946. He later returned to his education, graduating from UT with a BS in Business Administration in 1948. Hunt spent most of his professional career working for Standard Knitting Mills and the University of Tennessee Physical Plant. He was also active in the Army Reserves (where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel) and a member of Knoxville's First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder. Hunt died in Knoxville on December 16, 2008, and is buried in Highland Memorial Cemetery.
