This collection documents the World War II service of George M. Valentine. It contains papers such as of newspaper clippings, a presidential citation to the 761st Tank Battalion, reunion and memorial service programs, and photographs, most of which are photocopies. It also includes a typed transcript of an oral history interview with Valentine conducted in 1987.

It also includes a typed transcript of an oral history interview with Valentine conducted in 1987.

Biographical / Historical

George Melvin Valentine was born to Charles and Beaulah Valentine in Maryville, Tennessee, on January 18, 1919. After graduating high school in 1937, he worked for the Aluminum Company of America. Valentine was called to serve in the military in May 1942, serving as a tank gunner in the Army's 761st Tank Battalion in the European Theatre. He completed Basic Training at Fort Knox and then went to Camp Claiborne in Louisiana for over a year. Valentine and the 761st Tank Battalion arrived in Omaha Beach, France, in November 1945, and then advanced around 400 miles to Nance to join with other divisions. Valentine married Mary Louise Chestnutt Valentine (1923-1992). He died on April 6, 2012, and is buried in Blount County.
