Biographical/Historical Note
Mary Ann Eastin was born to William and Rachel (Donelson) Eastin in 1810. She was Andrew Jackson's grand-niece on her mother's side and close friends with Emily Donelson, who served as mistress of the White House during Andrew Jackson's presidency. Eastin married Lucius Junius Polk (1802-1870) in the White House on April 10, 1832. The couple had eight children: Sarah Rachel (Polk) Jones (1833-1905), Mary Brown (Polk) Yeatman (1835-1890), Emily Donelson (Polk) Williams (1837-1892), William (1839-1905), Eliza Eastin (1841-1897), Frances Anne (Polk) Dillon (1844-1912), Susan Rebecca (Polk) Brown (1847-1922), and George Washington (1847-1924). Mary Eastin Polk died on August 1, 1847 and is buried at St. John's Church in Maury County, Tennessee.
