Biographical/Historical Note
The Holston Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1824. Knoxville's Methodist Church had previously been a part of the Tennessee Conference; the newly created Holston Conference included East Tennessee as well as parts of North Carolina and Virginia. In 1844 the Methodist Church split into two factions, North and South, over the issue of slavery. Knoxville's Methodist Church was part of the South. No Northern Methodist Church existed in Knoxville until after the Civil War. From 1866 until 1939 separate Holston Conferences were held for North and South.
