Abstract

This collection houses photographs, deeds, genealogical charts, maps, and articles documenting the McMahan family of Sevier County, Tennessee during the 19th century. The majority of the material shows Thomas D. W. McMahan and his immediate family.

Biographical/Historical Note

Thomas DeArnold Wilson McMahan was born to McNulty (1826-1894) and Leah Rinehart (1834-1918) McMahan on December 13, 1849. He was one of ten children, including John Marshall (1851-1926), Mary Lunaria (McMahan) Maples (1853-1894), Sarah Elizabeth (1855-1888), William Wesley (1856-1871), David Crockett (1858-1898), Samuel McNulty (1861-1887), James Seldon (1862-1893), Martha Elanor (McMahan) Schultz (1865-1894), Robert Alexander (1866-1841), and Horace Maynard (1872-1945). Thomas McMahan married Melinda Caldonia Trotter in 1877 and the couple had six children who survived infancy: Bertha Eileen (McMahan) Byrd (1878-1959), Olen Ernest (1883-1970), Nora Trotter (1887-1936), Roy Haskell (1892-1952), Stella Wilson (McMahan) Butler (1895-1990), and John Alvin (1898-1984). Thomas McMahan died on October 5, 1921 of Bright's Disease.
