This collection contains subject files, mostly consisting of annual reports prepared for the Interstate Commerce Commission from 1898 to 1904 and also including 1912. The 1898 and 1899 annual reports are those of the Nashville-Knoxville Railroad Company, which was later purchased by the Tennessee Central Railroad. The 1901 report is that of Tennessee Central Railway, also later purchased by Tennessee Central Railroad. Within these reports, there are detailed financial statements for the year in question. Also notable in this collection is a compilation of correspondence between the auditor for Tennessee Central Railroad and the Statistics Bureau of the Interstate Commerce Commission.

Abstract

This collection contains material relating to the Tennessee Central Railroad, particularly subject files consisting of annual reports and a compilation of correspondence between the auditor for Tennessee Central Railroad and the Statistics Bureau of the Interstate Commerce Commission.

Biographical/Historical Note

Originally organized on April 20, 1901 as the Nashville and Clarksville Railroad Company, the corporate name was changed on April 30, 1902 to the Tennessee Central Railroad Company. The change was the result of the 1902 purchase of several Tennessee railroad companies such as the Tennessee Central Railway Company, Cumberland Plateau Railroad Company, Tennessee Central Railway (not same as above) and the Nashville-Knoxville Railroad. Tennessee Central Railroad was a publicly held company.
