Biographical/Historical Note

James Branch Cabell was born to Robert Gamble and Ann (Branch) Cabell in Richmond, Virginia on April 14, 1879. He earned his AB from William and Mary College in 1898 and married Priscilla Bradley Shepherd (1874-1949) on November 8, 1913. The couple had one son, Ballard Hartwell (1913-1980). After his first wife's death, Cabell married Margaret Waller Freeman (1893-1983). Cabell held a number of jobs during his life, working as an Instructor in French and Greek at William and Mary College (1896-1897), in the pressroom for the Richmond Times (1898), as a journalist for the New York Herald (1899-1901) and the Richmond News (1901), and in coal mining in West Virginia (1911-1913). He is, however, best known for writing such fantasy fiction as Jurgen: a Comedy of Justice (1919) and The Biography of Manuel. Cabell died on May 5, 1958.
