Biographical/Historical Note
Jeremiah Gurney was born to Benjamin and Martha (Bedell) Gurney on October 17, 1812. He worked as a jeweler until about 1840, when he learned the daugerrian photographic process and opened a studio in New York City on Broadway. Gurney exhibited his work at such events as the American Institute Fair (1846-1848, 1850-1851) and the Crystal Palace (1851). He also pioneered new techniques, including double full plates (1850). Gurney began using paper processes in about 1853 and continued to rely on this technique for the remainder of his career. He formed a partnership with C. D. Fredericks in 1854 and the two worked together until 1857. Gurney operated alone until 1861, when he collaborated with his son, Benjamin Gurney, under the name J. Gurney & Son. This partnership was dissolved in 1874, and Jeremiah Gurney died in approximately 1886 in New York City.
