In this letter, John W. Ford recommends Colonel James D. Priest to James K. Polk for the position of Quartermaster in a military regiment that Polk is forming.
Biographical/Historical Note
John W. Ford was born February 3, 1800 in Smith County, Tennessee. In 1818, he began working at the Lebanon Gazette. That summer on July 23, 1818, he married Elizabeth Rollin. Ford went on to work for multiple newspapers in the area as an editor including The Sparta Gazette (1820), The Sparta Review (1824), Warren Register (1832), the Democratic Advertiser (1850), The Chattanooga Advertiser (1852), the Southern Reflector (1859), and the Chattanooga Advertiser (1860). Ford died on November 7, 1883 in Bentonville, Arkansas.
