The collection consists primarily of personal interviews and research concerning the University of Tennessee between 1887 and 1945. Also included are business correspondence and files.

Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. James R. Montgomery graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1952. He served the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the University of Tennessee as Director of the Office of Institutional Research. He is the author of several histories of the university at various periods. These - along with the volumes of university history written by Stanley Folmsbee - were edited and expanded in time to create the single volume titled To Foster Knowledge by Lee Greene.

Arrangement

Collection consists of five boxes divided into eight series: Business Correspondence and Files; Publications and Notes; Institutional Research Office Reports; University of Tennessee Reports - Bound Volumes; Alumni Material; Research Studies; University of Tennessee Histories; and Research Interviews.

Acquisition Note

James R. and Mary B. Montgomery donated these papers to the University of Tennessee Libraries, Knoxville, Special Collections in 1990.
