Abstract
This collection houses a receipt that W. Brown, deputy tax collector for the Third District of Tennessee, issued to John McCord on April 29, 1817. It documents McCord's payment of $0.45 in direct tax on Thomas Hendricks' property in Overton County, Tennessee.
Biographical/Historical Note
John McCord was born on January 16, 1780 to James and Jane (Scroggs) McCord in North Carolina. The family moved to Overton County, Tennessee when John was young. He married Mary Willard (1785-1861) in about 1805. The couple had ten known children: Jane C., Sarah, William Willard, Nancy H., Mary H., John Willard, Thomas H., Margaret, Alexander Younger, and Elizabeth. The family moved to Hancock County, Illinois in about 1830 where John McCord worked as a farmer. He was also active in religion and helped to establish the Bersheba Congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1834. McCord died in Illinois on June 1, 1861.
