In this letter, James C. Luttrell informs Robert Armstrong that he and Thomas Brown have arranged for Luttrell to provide Armstrong with an order for the amount Luttrell owes on a debt. Armstrong will then give the order to Brown, who will pay the amount indicated. Luttrell had originally borrowed $110.75 and calculates that he still owes Armstrong $63.75.

Biographical/Historical Note

James Churchwell Luttrell was born on February 12, 1755 to Richard and Sarah (Churchwell) Luttrell in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Witt, and the couple had 10 children: William, Nancy, James Churchwell, Martha, Lewis, Abner, Elizabeth, Sarah, Rhoda, and Robert. Luttrell fought in the Revolutionary War as a Minuteman under Captain James Dillard (1780) and as a Private under Captain Charles Christian (1781). When the war ended, the family moved to Knox County, Tennessee. Luttrell died in Knoxville in 1848.
