Biographical/Historical Note

Charles A. Baldwin was born on January 4, 1861 to Rear Admiral Charles H. and Permelia (Tolfree) Baldwin in San Francisco, California. He attended Harvard University, where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Baldwin married Virginia Hobart (whose father was Walter Scott Hobart of Comstock Lode fame) and the couple had two sons, both of whom died in childhood. They lived on a California estate (built in 1892 and home to their successful vineyard) that they named Le Petit Trianon after the palace at Versailles. They built a second estate modeled after Versailles, called The Trianon but known to them as the Claremont, in Colorado Springs in 1907. Charles Baldwin died in 1934 in Colorado Springs. Virginia Baldwin married Georgian Prince Zourab Tchkotoua on February 11, 1949 and died on August 17, 1958 in San Francisco, California.
